First time here and as friendly as staff try to be, service is slack. Kidz First is more like Kidz on Hold while we giggle, chat and make excuses instead of doing our jobs ! The wait time is beyond ridiculous with the amount of staff that stand around and gas bag then roll eyes on who should tend to patient standing right in front of them at reception you'd think there were no patients in the waiting room at all. The A&E is equally bad. I never write reviews and if someone up the ladder were doing their job properly half the people walking the hospital halls would be out of jobs ! The good ol there will be a 4hr wait EXCUSE ! It's terrible when former employees spill the real truth behind that awesome excuse to get people out the door. If you're not where you want to be GET A NEW JOB !!

Parents bring their babies and kids thinking they will be looked after quickly thats called emergency but the wait time is not helping at all no point of emergency 4 hours wait is not called emergency. Do appreciate the priority however 11 month old is rapid breathing and we saw kids elder who can cope up well and came after us was looked after first and kid under 1 year who have severe cough with rapid breathing have no priority. We do understand doctor and nurses are human not robots but they need to talk less and set right priority. GP are also no help

4 stars purely for nurses and doctors who were nice and friendly. However one receptionist was flat out rude. When asked where in the line its a simple estimate. We deserve to know

The staff here are all very friendly, and do what they can to make you stay as comfortable as they can. A shout out to the wonderful play specialist team too, they make staying in hospital a memorable experience for the kids, and give them something positive to remember from their hospital stay.

Had such a poor experience in this hospital, walked in with my 4 year old who has developed bad skin rashes all over his body with high fever and itchiness- waited for 3 hours without seen by any doctor. Seeing other patients who came after us all seen by doctors. Checked with reception and other nurses- they said doctor being assigned to your son and he will be seen soon. After a long wait- again asked the reception about the wait- head nurse said ur son has already been seen by a doctor and is discharged as per system. Such a poor system and management.

I realise this is a long time ago, but in 2006 my sons (he was 10 years old) counsellor at whakatata house told me to tie his door handle to the opposite door handle in my hallway so he couldn't get out because he was screaming in terror every night and seeing shadow people". I listened to the counsellor and did as I was told. This is still haunting me and filling me with guilt to this day. I still hear his screams begging for help and it kills me"

Waiting times are just unacceptable at all. Be prepared to spend there at least 4 hours before you see the doctor. NZ medical services are horrible in terms of timing and outcome. Better to stay home and use Google advice.

Be prepared to wait for hours on end until a dr comes to see you. But don’t worry, you get to wait in a rundown, dirty hospital with disinterested doctors who are all ‘cookie-cutter’ clones of each other. Same questions, same tests, same perpetual bewilderment and same conclusion.“We have this amazing panacea called paracetamol. Have you got some at home? No? Don’t worry I’ll give you some of this amazing cure-all to take with you. Oh, and by the way, if it reoccurs feel free to bring your kid back and we’ll look at them again. You’ll have to wait for at least 4 to 5 hours again, but we might give you our second cure all- it’s called ibuprofen. Hey kid in room 1- here’s some paracetamol. Hey kid in room 2- here’s some paracetamol, rooms 3 to 22 here’s some paracetamol. Now I’m off to see how quickly I can discharge you all because I don’t actually know what I’m doing so I’ll give you paracetamol. Sorry your kid has to live in pain and keep coming back by ambulance, but eventually the paracetamol will work, I promise- but if you have to come back you’ll get a different doctor who’ll ask all the same questions as I did. Don’t worry though, they have as much paracetamol as you’ll ever need.”
