Nice little place. Weather was not really in their control. Not much to do - might be a good thing

Shaw's Bird Park
Great experience! Interactive bird park with gorgeous birds and animals. Great playground for the kids. Entrance fee is by donations only. This place is currently under threat of removal by council due to building a new road network, let's help save the bird park!

Excellent option for cyclists for onward travel from Horeke with bikes from Horeke tavern to Rawene. You can also travel to Kohukohu for onward cycling North. The owner was a perfect gentleman, flexible and really saved our day because road access to Rawene is problematic for many cyclists. Fair value and highly recommended. You also get a view from the water of the mission house.

What an AMAZING PLACE! The view from the rooms and breakfast gazebo are second-to-none, beds are comfy, and Jill the host lays down a wonderful breakfast from locally-sourced food--including her own garden. AND she is a lot of fun! We hope to wander back in the future, it was a beautiful place to end this trip to New Zealand.

Amazing spot to view gannets up close! Have been in December when gannets where looking after their chicks. It is only a short walk from the car park, very accessible for most people. However, car park was very busy during summer holiday season and we had to wait a bit for a spot to become available.Definitely recommend driving out there for the gannets in nesting season.

Glow Worms & Birds - Mount Tutu Eco-Sanctuary
What a lovely stay with Tim and Debbie! My sister and I booked a get-away from Auckland and we were delighted with the stay! A cosy room, all recycled materials, lovely guided bush walk in the morning as well as guided glow worm tour in the evening....not to mention breakfast included along with the insightful, warm and funny banter with Tim on the tours. Debbie even made us cupcakes on arrival. We had a great stay and already planning our next visit with more family!

Carino Wildlife Cruises
I read all of the reviews for Carino before booking, and I am glad I did. Most of the people who have written negative reviews did so because they didn't get to see or swim with dolphins. This is explicitly stated on the Carino website, yes it is a gamble, but you're on a boat in the Bay of Islands, that in itself is so amazing!Carino is a small tour company, family run, and they follow the DOC rules to a T. The cruise was beautiful, we saw a huge pod of dolphins, swam to shore, hiked, had a great BBQ lunch, and a quiet sale back to Paihia. I highly recommend Carino other the larger tours.
